A one-day digestive check-up: how it works
· 5 min read
When a check-up is stretched over a week, not everyone gets to the end: the appointment on one day, the gastroscopy on another, the ultrasound on a third. Here is what a day looks like when everything is done at once, and what to bring
How this usually goes
Murat lives in a rural district, three hours by car from Uralsk. His stomach had been troubling him for a second year, but every attempt to get checked ended the same way: appointment — referral — «come back in a week». He could not carve out a week, and would not agree to two trips: work, family, the road
This time he asked in advance whether it could all fit into one day. He was given the order of events: appointment in the morning, the gastroscopy and the ultrasound straight after, the results discussed the same day. He came on an empty stomach and brought his old scans and a list of his pills
By lunchtime the endoscopist's report and the ultrasound images were ready. In the second half of the appointment the doctor went through what had been found, which of it explained his complaints and what to do over the first two weeks. Murat drove home in the evening with a prescription in hand, not a referral for later
That is exactly why he drove three hours: to get a conclusion and a prescription in a single visit
What people come with
Three groups ask for a single day most often: people from the districts, shift workers between rotations, and parents with no one to stand in for them. The question is almost always the same — «will we get through everything in one visit?». The second question is what it costs as a whole, rather than piece by piece
If this is you
- I am from a rural district, will one day be enough?
- How much does it all cost together?
- Should I come on an empty stomach, or can I have breakfast?
How it goes
The order is this: an appointment with the gastroenterologist, then whatever the picture calls for — gastroscopy, ultrasound, lab tests. All in one centre and on one day. After the tests the person returns to the doctor, and the prescriptions are written from finished results. If something cannot be done that day — preparation is needed, or the person's condition does not allow it — the doctor says so straight away, before the check-up is paid for
How to prepare
Come on an empty stomach: both the gastroscopy and the abdominal ultrasound are done fasting, and there is no way to replay that later the same day. Bring earlier reports and a list of the medicines you take regularly. If you are travelling from a district, allow for the whole morning and early afternoon, not an hour
What people ask most
What does the «one-day check-up» include?
There is no ready-made package: the appointment comes first, and the doctor names the tests after talking to you and examining you. Most often it is a gastroscopy and an ultrasound, sometimes lab tests
Do I book the appointment and the examination separately?
Say when you book that you are coming for a single day. Then the appointment and the examination are set back to back rather than on different days
What if I feel unwell after the gastroscopy and cannot get home?
After a standard gastroscopy without sedation there are no travel restrictions. If it is done under sedation you must not drive that day — plan who will take you home
