How to choose a cosmetologist: five questions for the first visit

A client comes to have a mole removed and leaves with the same receipt as for a facial cleaning. The difference between these two services is huge: one removes oily shine, the other touches living tissue that is later examined under a microscope. Yet the directory has one sign, "cosmetologist," for everyone. 512 of the 1,766 active businesses in Kazakhstan list removal of growths, almost one in three. Here is what to ask before you sit in the chair

What do businesses under the "cosmetologist" sign actually do?

A quarter of businesses with the "cosmetologist" sign also do nails and brows. This is not scary in itself, but it shows that the sign in the directory promises little. You need to ask specifically: what exactly can the specialist you are booking with do

The main thing: moles and growths

Almost every third cosmetologist lists removal of growths. Removing a mole or a papilloma is technically simple. But here is what you should know before booking

Ask about histology. A removed growth is sent to a laboratory to check whether it was malignant. If this is not done, you will never know what exactly was removed from you. Early-stage melanoma looks like an ordinary mole

Ask who will do the removal. It is a medical procedure, and the person must have medical training

Do not remove a mole that has changed. If it grows, changes color, itches, or bleeds, see a dermatologist or an oncologist first, and decide only after that

This is no reason to fear a cosmetologist: a good clinic does histology by default and will tell you about it itself. It is a reason to ask the question before the procedure, not after it

What questions should I ask at the first visit to a cosmetologist?

  1. What is your education, and do you have a medical diploma
  2. What exactly will you do today, and why is it right for my skin
  3. What should I avoid afterward: sun, pool, cosmetics
  4. What should I do if there is a reaction, and how can I reach you in the evening
  5. For injections and devices: which drug or device, and will you show the packaging

A good specialist will ask you first: about illnesses, medications, allergies, pregnancy, and past procedures. If they did not ask, that is already an answer

About the stars in the directory

The median rating of cosmetologists is 4.90, with 27 reviews. You cannot tell anyone apart by rating: it is almost the same for everyone. Look at the number of reviews and read the recent ones, especially before injections or removal
