Half of the "fives" rest on three reviews

Our count as of August 24, 2026

A 5.0 rating guarantees nothing: the median number of reviews in this group is three, and half of the "fives" have exactly that many or fewer. There are 6,945 such businesses with a perfect score out of 19,639 rated ones, more than a third of the 26,636 salons, studios, and clinics in Kazakhstan

How many reviews stand behind a rating?

4.5-4.93,80619%313%
4.0-4.43,14316%214%
3.0-3.93,61818%1319%
below 3.02,12711%540%

The "4.5-4.9" row is the only one with really many reviews: the median is 31, and only three percent have fewer than four. A business with a 4.7 and thirty reviews knows more about itself than a business with a 5.0 and two

Another 6,997 businesses have no rating at all, a quarter of the directory

Why does this happen?

The first reviews are written by those who were asked: friends, colleagues, a happy client right after the visit. All of them give five. Variety comes later, when a few dozen reviews pile up

So a 5.0 is most often a mark that "few people have rated us so far," and only after that a mark of quality

How do you read a business's rating?

  1. Look at the number of reviews first, then at the score. With fewer than ten, the score measures nothing
  2. Between "5.0 and two reviews" and "4.6 and eighty reviews," choose the second
  3. A rating below three with five reviews also means little: one conflict pulls the average down as easily as one friend pulls it up
  4. Read the reviews themselves from the last months. Old ones describe a business that no longer exists: the specialists, the address, the prices have changed

What this means for a business

Three reviews and a five look weaker than thirty reviews and a 4.6. A client who knows how to read ratings will pass by an empty listing

How we counted

The source is the open 2GIS directory, counted on August 24, 2026. We took 194 beauty and health categories and merged rows for the same business by its phone number. Businesses without a rating were counted separately: on the first pass they fell into the "below 3.0" group and spoiled it, because their rating field equals zero

We use the median instead of the average: the average of reviews is broken by a couple of businesses with thousands of reviews

Numbers in this article come from our own database of public directories in Kazakhstan, counted on August 24, 2026. We count them ourselves and never take them from other reports
